How To Remove Scratches From Glass Windows (Powerful Guide)

Do you have a glass window that is covered in scratches? Are you finding a solution to get rid of them?

Everyone knows how challenging it is to maintain a spotless and scratch-free pane of glass. Glass surfaces are constantly being bombarded with dirt, debris, grime, fingerprints, and other marks that can be difficult to remove.

While you can clean some of these marks with a glass cleaner, others require a more hands-on approach. Scratches, for example, can be difficult to remove without damaging the glass.

If you want to know how to remove scratches from glass windows, I can help. Here, I’ll go over a few different approaches to polishing glass and removing those unsightly scratches.

Before I start, note that not you can’t remove every scratch. A deep enough scratch can end up being irreversible. On the other hand, if it’s just a minor scratch, you might be able to polish it out.

Reasons Your Glass is Scratched

There are a few different reasons why your glass may be scratched. Some of the most common include:

  • Cleaning the glass with a rough cloth or abrasive cleaner

This is one of the most common causes of scratched glass. Always use a soft, lint-free cloth when wiping glass surfaces. Abrasive cleaners can also damage the glass, so avoid them.

  • Accidentally dropping something on the glass

If you drop something hard on the glass, it can cause scratches especially if the item is sharp.

  • Rubbing the glass too hard

If you rub the glass too hard when cleaning it, you can also cause scratches.

7 Ways On How To Remove Scratches From Glass Windows

Method 1: Baking Soda

Yes, baking soda works well as a glass polishing agent. Scratches on a window can be removed using baking soda, but first, you should clean the glass with a soft cloth and some warm water. Use a clean cloth, so you don’t scrape the surface or introduce any new particles.

➊ Mix one tbsp. of water and one tbsp. of baking soda. Be sure to use a clean container to avoid adding any unwanted contaminants to the mixture that could exacerbate the scratches.

➋ Mix everything together with a little spatula. Then, it would help if you attempted to eliminate the undissolved baking soda that has become huge clumps. When it forms a paste, you can stop stirring.

➌ Then, wrap the smaller piece of fabric around your first finger and push it into the mixture. Remember to take a small amount of paste.

➍ Use your finger to dab the paste onto the scratched glass and move in a circular motion to buff out the scratch. Keep going like this for a full minute. If you’ve done it well, you should feel the scratch disappearing.

If you want to get rid of all the baking soda, you should rinse the window glass and wipe it off with a clean cloth. Voila! The scratches are no longer visible, thanks to your efforts.

Method 2: Toothpaste

Toothpaste’s multipurpose nature makes it useful for more than just tooth care. Actually, toothpaste is one of the most widely available household substances you can use to repair minor scratches.

If you intend to use a cloth for sterilizing or cleaning purposes, you should ensure it is clean. As a bonus, the toothpaste you’ll use is of the powder, white form rather than the gel or non-pigmented variety. Any toothpaste that contains baking soda will do the job just fine.

❶ Put a clean, thin cloth around your index finger.

➋ Wrap your finger and apply a tiny bit of toothpaste (around the size of your pinky) to the finger. For best results, apply the paste in a circular motion to the scratched area and leave it on for 30 seconds before checking the results.

❸ Since this approach requires multiple applications before a noticeable result is seen, you should not worry if the scratch is still present.

❹ You should rinse the glass after each application, and if the scratch persists after several toothpaste applications, you should repeat the procedure. The recommended treatment is a 30-second circular rubdown.

❺ After completing the exercise, wipe away the toothpaste with a moist cloth. If the glass is still cloudy, you can use a small amount of vinegar on a clean cloth to wipe away the residue.

Method 3: Nail Polish

You can also use nail polish to fix a scratched piece of glass. In this particular instance, you should look for clear nail polish that does not have a matte finish. A top coat will also suffice.

❶ It would be best to start by cleaning the glass surface with a lint-free cloth.

❷ Once the glass is clean, apply the nail polish to the scratched area in a thin layer. The best effects will come from using a tiny brush.

❸ After putting on nail polish, you must allow it to dry completely. Drying is complete when there is no visible wetness or sticky residue.

❹ After the nail polish has dried, you should apply a second coat. After the second layer dries, you can evaluate.

❺ Apply a third application if the scratch is still evident after the second. Just use acetone or some other nail polish remover after you’re done.

❻Get a lint-free cloth and wipe down the surface.

Method 4: Vegetable Oil

Scratches can also be removed from glass by using vegetable oil as an alternative. In this case, you will need a clean, soft cloth and a small amount of vegetable oil.

❶ Put a little oil on the cloth. You should ensure that the cloth is saturated but not dripping.

❷ Lightly wipe the scratched surface with the oiled cloth in a circular movement. Use this method until the scratch disappears.

❸ If you’re happy with the outcome, wipe away the oil with a dry cloth.

Method 5: Cerium Oxide Glass Polish

Cerium oxide is a chemical compound used to remove window scratches from auto glass. In this case, you will need cerium oxide powder, water, and a clean cloth.

❶ First, make a paste by combining the cerium oxide powder with water. The paste must be thick but not overly thick.

❷ Then, paint the paste into the scrape using a brush. For a smooth result, be careful to maintain constant pressure during application.

❸ Until the glass scratch is completely filled, you should repeat the process. You can then remove the paste with a clean, damp cloth.

Method 6: Metal Polish

Metal polish is another option that can work well, and it’s relatively simple to do.

❶ First, you’ll need to clean the area around the scratches with a glass cleaner and a soft cloth.

❷ Then, use a clean cloth.

❸ Next, dip in metal polish to gently rub the damaged area using a circular motion to remove the scratches. You may need to apply several coats before the scratches start to disappear.

❹ Once they’re gone, buff the area with a clean cloth to remove any residual metal polish. If the scratch is deep or does not respond to metal polish, you will need to consult a professional for repairs.

Method 7: Clear Scratch Repair Solution

Lastly, you can fix the scratch yourself by following the directions included in a scratch glass repair kit designed for glass. Some of these kits may include buffing discs. Therefore, be careful not to scrape the surface any further.

If you don’t have a kit, look for a clear scratch repair solution that you can apply directly to the scratched area.

❶ With a clean, soft cloth, dab the solution onto the scratch. Use gentle circular strokes to buff the scratch out.

❷ Then, apply a dry, clean cloth to absorb any remaining solution..

These are some techniques for removing scratches from glass. You will need to consult a glass restoration professional if the scratch is deep or does not respond to any of these methods.
