Everything You Need To Know About The Sims 4 Pronoun Update

Sims 4 Pronoun Update

The Sims 4 is the most recent release in the extremely popular The Sims franchise. It’s a social simulation game that allows players to control the lives of avatars called “Sims.”

Anyway, The Sims 4 was released in 2014, but it still receives fairly regular updates and expansion packs. The most recent update allows players to change the pronouns used to describe their in-game Sims.

This Sims 4 Pronoun Update is one that came about after a Twitch streamer, MomoMisfortune, started a Change.org petition to allow Simmers to change the pronouns of their Sims. The petition received over 22,000 signatures, which caught the attention of Maxis, the developer of The Sims 4, and EA, the publisher of The Sims 4.

Maxis and EA both liked the idea and decided to add it to the game as an update. The studio even worked with the It Gets Better Project and GLAAD to fully understand how different pronouns could effectively be used in the game.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can you change your Sim’s pronouns in The Sims 4?

Yes, as of the most recent update it is now possible to change your Sim’s pronouns in The Sims 4. The process for changing the pronouns is easy. All you have to do is go to the “Create a Sim” interface and choose the “Hello, my name and pronouns are…” option.

From there, you can change the name or the pronouns of that particular Sim. The pronoun options include the following:

  • He/Him
  • She/Her
  • They/Them

Most importantly, there is a custom option that allows players to use a custom pronoun for their Sim. There’s also a filter on the custom pronouns, which should prevent abuse.

How are pronouns used in The Sims 4?

Pronouns are used in The Sims 4 the same way they are used in the real world — to address you (the Sim in the case of the game).

Now, the technical implementation of pronouns and dialogue in The Sims 4 has changed a little bit as a result of the update. Basically, The Sims 4 went from using a hard coded dialogue to using a variable dialogue.

In other words, the dialogue changes based on what pronoun you have selected for your Sim. However, the only part of the dialogue changed is the pronoun. Any words following the pronoun are not changed.

This has led to some grammatical errors (“They likes…” rather than “They like…”) that Maxis does intend to fix in a future update.

Are there non-gendered pronouns in The Sims 4?

It is possible to choose non-gendered pronouns (They/Them) for your Sim or to add your own custom pronoun for your Sim. However, there is still gendered language in the game such as “Policeman” and “Policewoman.”

Maxis has stated that they have plans to update the game to make it more inclusive by removing gendered language. At the moment, though, the gendered language still exists in the game.

No timeline has been released for when Maxis plans on removing the gendered language.

Final Words

It’s good to see EA taking the initiative and allowing users to change pronouns in The Sims 4. The community has wanted this for a long time and will certainly make the game more inclusive for everyone. Not to mention that it more accurately reflects society, which is one of the purposes of The Sims franchise.

Of course, EA needs to make further updates like updating some of the grammatical mistakes that arise from custom pronouns and removing the gendered language, but this is a good first step in the right direction.
